Pada posting kali ini akan diuraikan materi tentang idiom dalam bahasa Keminggris. Idiom secara sederhana bisa didefinisikan sebagai gabungan 2 kata atau lebih yang membentuk makna khusus/baru, yang tidak bisa diartikan sama dengan gabungan kata-kata penyusunnya.
Nah yang dimaksud kata-kata penyusunnya adalah sebagaiberikut:
Misalnya “keep on”, ini disusun dari kata keep (yang artinya “menjaga”), dan kata “on” (yang berarti “di atas”). Idiom ini mempunyai makna baru/khusus yaitu terus/ terus-menerus, dan tidak bisa kita artikan “menjaga di atas”.
Untuk memperlancar keminggris kita, ada beberapa idiom sederhana yang bisa kita hafal disertai dengan contoh penggunaannya, seperti list di bawah ini:

running out of gasoline = kehabisan bensin
where are you heading ? = anda mau kemana ?
can you tell a chinese from a korean ? = bisakan anda membedakan orang china dan orang korea ?
to make both ends meet = hidup pas-pasan
i will do my best = saya akan berusaha sungguh-sungguh (saya akan melaku yg terbaik)
above all = yang terpenting/ terutama
to be about to = baru saja hendak
drop in/by = mampir/singgah
all the better = malah lebih baik
after while = nanti sebentar
all the same = sama saja/ jika tidak apa-apa
all the time = sejak dulu, non stop, terus menerus
arm in arm = bergandeng tangan
all over = semua telah selesai
as far as/ so far as = sampai/ sepanjang
as for = mengenai/ kalau
as if = seolah-olah

to have a rest = istirahat

in advance = di muka, lebih dahulu, sebelumnya (thanks in advance of your kind attention = trimakasih sebelumnya atas perhatian baikmu) jadi salah atau kurang tepat kalau kita bilang thanks before

in charge = bertugas, memegang pimpinan (jhon is in charge now = jhon sedang bertugas sekarang)
in general = umumnya(the weather in jakarta is warm in general)
in love = sangat menyayangi(the new couple married are in love one another)
in memory of = sebagai peringatan(the new building was named ford hall in memory of james ford)
heartfelt thanks of = terima kasih dengan setulus hati
in secret = secara diam-diam, masih rahasia(let no onee knows about it,please tell me in secret)
just about = hampir(i just about missed the train)
just now, a while ago= tadi, baru saja, sesaat yang lalu
to keep from = mencegah, menahan(i keep her from going there alone)
to keep dark = merahasiakan (you have to keep it dark to every one)
to keep in mind = mencamkan, camkan,(please, keep my advice in mind=tolong,camkan nasehat saya)
never stop to learn !!! we don’t have to be great to start, but we have to start to be great !
to keep in touch = menjaga agar selalu berkomunikasi/berhubungan (when you are abroad, please keep in touch with us any time) any time = setiap waktu
to keep on = terus,terus menerus(i keep/keep on walking/learning = saya terus berjalan/belajar))
to know by sight = mengenal seseorang karena pernah melihat ( i never meet him but i know him by sight = saya tdk pernah berjumpa dengannya tapi saya tahu pernah melihatnya)

to look after = menjaga, mengurus (jhon’s mother told him to look after his youngest sister when she is out)
to look down on = memandang rendah orang lain (she always looks down on her friends)
to look forward to = sangat mengharap(we are looking forward to seeing you again)
to look into = menyelidiki(we shall look into their complains)
to look back = merenungkan kembali(mary likes to look back on her old times)

to look up to = menghormati(the students must look up to their teacher)

by the way (btw) = ngomong-ngomong (by the way, do you know many idioms ?) (by the way, i would like to improve my english grammar)
in coming = masuk ( in coming commander = komandan yg baru masuk)
out going = keluar ( out going commander = komandan yang lama = keluar)
hand over = menyerahkan
take over = mengambil alih
raise the flag = naik bendera
lower the flag = turun bendera
half mast the flag = bendera 1/2 tiang (berkabungan)/ berduka )= mourning
in the pink = sehat, kondisi kesehatannya bagus, dalam keadaan bagus (i’m feeling in the pink now. thanks for the treatment doctor or i always take good care of my dog. they always stay in the pink.
in the same boat = berada dalam situasi yg sama buruknya (both jane and i don’t have money at all. we are in the same boat.
at all = sama sekali
rain cats and dogs = hujan sangat deras sekali = heavy rain (don’t forget your umbrella. it is raining cats and dogs.
money to burn = uang lebih , uang untuk dipakai sesukanya = extra money (he is taking us to an expensive restaurant. he must have money to burn
what a dame ! = alangkah cantiknya
sleep like a long = sound sleep = tidur nyenyak sekali (he was so tired last night that i he slept like a long)
speak of the devil = orang yg lagi dibicarakan..eh tahu-tahu muncul seketika i hadapan orang yg sedang membicarakannya (we were talking about iwan when all of a sudden he walked in “aha ! speak of the devil”.
miss the boat = kehilangan kesempatan karena terlalu lambat atau terlambat (damn. the sale is over. i miss the boat)
green thumb = kalau menanam tanaman selalu berhasil tumbuh dng baik/subur (my mother has a green thumb. you should see her garden! every thing grows well.
don’t rain on my parade = jangan rusak rencana2 saya (oh, c’mon ! don’t rain on my parade. you can someone else to go with you)
drop you a line = memberi khabar/ menulis surat (i will drop you a line once i reach jakarta)
safe and sound = selamat tak kurang sesuatu apapun (it was a bumpy ride, but i finally a rrived safe and sound)
in the dark = tdk diberitahu/ buta informasi (i know nothing about it. you have left me in the dark)
